Tournament Mode begins! - 0.4.3 devlog
After about a semester of hard work, a big update hit the screens - featuring a brand new game mode, plus other shiny things!
SHINY:
Now Geomantic Arena features a Tournament mode, where one can play the same team facing sucessive battles in a row. Yay!
The team building thing makes much more sense now; it's cooler when you have to design a team able to face an unpredicable variety of fights.
There's also a new screen, dubbed Advanced Team Selection, which makes far easier to build and manage teams (allowing the player to filter daimons based on their tier, planetary or zodiacal association). So now you can easily design, name and save as many teams as you want!
The HUD was also updated, improving accessibility and making it more streamlined.
BOOOO:
There's still no true AI x AI battle: this dimension of the tournament still boils to a sophisticated coin toss. It'll take me quite some refactoring to decouple the combat calculations from the HUD (so that the combat can be calculated offscreen). I was extremely green when I first scripted the battle system, so there's a lot of spaghetti code lying in wait for me. It's an unavoidable task, though; local PVP is on the plans and It'll force me to pick the combat system apart, anyway.
Another unfortunate limitation is that the WebGL version is bound to erase saved teams when I upload a new version. There's no way to circumvent this on itch.io now, unless I set up a server of my own (which is not on my plans). A desktop version is also sufficient to solve this problem - soon.
AS FOR THE FUTURE:
A desktop version for 0.4.3 is upcoming.
I also plan on blogging a bit about the Geomantik Figures and the design challenges I'm facing with then.
I have detailed plans for the 0.5 update, which will introduce redesigned geomantik figures and, a bit later, local PVP!
As of 0.5 I'll also begin updating some of the art with the final versions, and finally developing a story mode - aiming for a vertical slice no later than mid-2025.
